Rad Impressions was a challenging and complex art project for the artist. It took around six months to build the necessary technology and experiment with generative compositions. Inspired by an incident from college, where a calculator melted under a desk lamp, the artist aimed to replicate the effect using raymarching for a generative composition.
The project involved creating a custom 3D rendering system to generate sculptures composed of geometric shapes. The artist delved into raymarching techniques, learning from resources like Inigo Quilez's articles and Shadertoy. They developed a software rendering system using JavaScript and added WebGL shader capabilities. The resulting technology, known as raymarching, enabled the creation of sculptures with smooth blending, soft shadows, reflections, and more. The artist plans to open-source the rendering tech in the future.
